  • Sustainability

Western Carolina University is focused on energy conservation. In 2013, the university created the Office of Sustainability and Energy Management to support a holistic integration of sustainability across all divisions of the university. To date, WCU has achieved a 35 percent BTU-per-square-foot reduction from 2002–2003 levels and avoided $20.6 million in energy costs. In 2014 the university began a campus lighting performance contract to convert all lighting in academic buildings and exterior locations to LED. This $3.3 million project will pay for itself in seven years from the energy savings. The university has also reduced its petroleum usage by implementing neighborhood electric vehicles and switching to E10, a blend of ethanol and unleaded gas to power the campus fleet. Further reductions have been made through a private ridesharing network for all students, faculty, and staff to promote carpooling on and off campus. Anything larger than 20,000 square feet on campus is required to seek LEED certification. There are now two LEED Gold buildings on campus. Each year the university participates in RecycleMania and Campus Conservation Nationals. In 2014 they placed top ten in the nation for Campus Conservation Nationals. EcoCATS (Conservation Awareness Team for Sustainability) is leading student efforts to green the campus and has helped launch a variety of projects, including recycling drives at campus events, Campus Sustainability Day, and Earth and Wellness Day. In 2013 the student body passed the Sustainable Energy Initiative, which is a $5 per semester fee to support green projects on campus, including energy efficiency, renewable energy, research, and internships.
