Sustainability
Among the many ways University of Missouri—Kansas City, promotes green living is its impressive bicycle plan. In addition to an on duty bicycle mechanic in The Hub, an on-campus cycling station, the school has two self-service repair stations. There are nearly 300 bicycle parking spots as well as indoor lockers. The Clean Commute Program loans out fifty bicycles to UMKC students so everyone can participate in this green, healthy, and fun method of transportation. The school’s dining services purchase locally grown food when possible, and even provides herbs and produce grown right on campus at the UMKC Garden Collective! Dining services use no-rinse products to reduce wasted dishwashing water, biodegradable cups, and 100 percent recycled napkins. In 2013, the university joined the U.S. Food Waste Challenge to encourage students and staff to help reduce food waste. The school has a strong recycling program, ranking thirteenth nationally in the 2012 RecycleMania Competition. The University estimates it has diverted over 1,800 tons of waste away from garbage dumps since 2005 by recycling 66 percent of all waste. Since 2008, UMKC has reduced carbon emissions by about 25 percent, and the school is working hard to decrease emissions even more. In 2012, the school earned a Silver STARS (Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System) rating. UMKC has multiple rain gardens that both divert storm water and create on-campus wildlife habitats.
