Sustainability
Messiah College, located just miles from Pennsylvania’s capital city, has been educating students about environmental stewardship and ethics for more than 40 years. Messiah is a signatory of the ACUPCC and students are leading the effort to help Messiah fulfill its commitment. Students run the Grantham Community Garden, an organic, on-campus garden that supplies fresh vegetables to campus dining services. Students are also responsible for composting all of the post-consumer waste from the main dining hall. The Sunflower Power Project, a full cycle of growing sunflowers, pressing and processing the seeds into oil for the dining hall and recycling the used oil into biodiesel fuel to power campus utility vehicles also has a significant student component. Every first-year student is required to take a core course that devotes significant time discussing caring for the natural world. Students aren’t the only ones doing their part. Facility Services partners with ITS to manage computer energy usage. One of the nation’s largest solar thermal systems sits atop a complex of residence halls. More than 200 trees have been planted in the past year to reduce mowing and subsequent fuel usage. While students enjoy the natural beauty of an ecofriendly campus, they can simultaneously prepare themselves as leaders of tomorrow. The can lead sustainability-related research, intern and enroll in the college’s interdisciplinary BA in sustainability studies with concentrations in sustainable agriculture, urban and community development, and environmental policy. Sustainability isn’t a buzzword on campus; it’s a way of life!
