  • Sustainability

Washington State University makes sustainability a top priority in its capital projects, transportation services, education and outreach programs, and scholarly research. The university optimizes new construction on campus for energy efficiency and waste reduction. It employs the LEED green building program for new capital projects, and multiple newly constructed buildings have achieved LEED certification. Recent investments in the existing campus infrastructure include $8.8 million in energy-efficient lighting retrofits, replacement of inefficient electric chillers, adoption of a water- and energy-efficient composting system, and adjustment of HVAC systems for optimal performance. Numerous campus programs have been created to make sustainable modes of transportation readily accessible. The Commute Trip Reduction program gives students incentives to purchase public transit passes. Students, faculty, and staff can ride city buses free, borrow bikes free, and coordinate carpools online. WSU’s educational and community outreach programs promote sustainability as well. The annual Imagine Tomorrow competition engages 9th through 12th graders from four states in addressing energy issues. The student-led Move Out-Pitch In program distributes items that departing students leave behind to local nonprofit groups. The quest for sustainability lies at the heart of many WSU research initiatives: improving performance of the nation’s electric power grid, transforming agricultural systems to mitigate global climate change, and building a sustainable industry for producing aviation biofuel, to name a few. The Federal Aviation Administration recently selected WSU and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to co-lead the new Center of Excellence for Alternative Jet Fuels and the Environment, which aims to foster a new industry focused on developing alternative jet fuels.
