Sustainability
Mizzou is known for a lot of things: great Division-I athletic teams, one of the nation’s largest Greek systems, and fantastic academics. But now it’s known for something else: being a sustainability rock star. Sustainability infiltrates every aspect of life on MU’s campus. The university has made a major commitment to energy conservation. While campus education and general (E&G) space has grown by 37 percent since 1990, energy use has been reduced by 19 percent and greenhouse gas emissions were reduced by 52 percent on a square foot basis. Biomass, solar, and wind energy technologies in MU’s energy portfolio are helping achieve campus sustainability goals and result in over 30 percent of MU’s energy coming from renewable energy resources. Mizzou is #1 among colleges and universities in on-site renewable energy generation. For several years, students have energized campus sustainability efforts. Tiger Tailgate Recycling recycled 200 tons of recyclables at home football games over the last nine years. Tigers for Community Agriculture, a student group, grew nearly 2000 pounds of vegetables in 2014 and donated more than 500 pounds to a local pantry. Food waste collected from campus dining halls was used to make compost that amended the soil in which the veggies were grown. The project is part of ongoing research examining the best ways to close the loop in the campus food system. In each area—research, education and extension—Mizzou’s sustainability indicatives are moving its commitment toward carbon neutrality forward.
