Sustainability
Virginia Tech (VT) is a nationally recognized campus sustainability leader. In 2014 VT received a STARS Gold Rating placing them in the top 10 percent of participating institutions. Virginia Tech’s unique Climate Action Commitment was approved in 2009 and created the Sustainability Office, established targets for greenhouse gas and waste reduction, and required LEED Silver certification or better for all new construction and major renovation projects. VT has 18 LEED registered projects totaling over 1.37 million GSF. The university offers 33 majors and degree programs and nearly 750 courses that integrate sustainability concepts and practices into areas of engineering, science, technology, design, natural resources, health, humanities, planning, and policy. Since 2010 the Dining Services garden at Kentland Farm has provided 122,000 pounds of sustainable produce for on-campus dining centers. Dining Services has composted over 4.5 million pounds of food waste and in 2014 introduced a Zero Waste Welcome Picnic for new students. VT has a 43 percent recycling rate, a 57 percent alternative transportation rate, and is recognized as a “Best Workplace for Commuters” and “Bicycle Friendly University.” In 2014, VT Dining Services received a Governor’s Environmental Excellence Award. Additionally, the annual Celebrate Sustainability event was recognized by USGBC’s “Best of Green Schools.” VT was also re-certified for “Tree Campus USA” status for the sixth consecutive year. Finally, sustainability opportunities for student involvement include participating in: university committees, student organizations, sustainability internships , and events such as America Recycles Day, Residence Hall Energy Competition, RecycleMania, and Earth Week.
