Sustainability
Virginia Wesleyan College’s dedication to going green is palpable and inspiring. The school makes a concerted effort to implement sustainable practices in as many realms as possible. For starters, Virginia Wesleyan has pledged that all future construction will conform to LEED specifications barring safety or practical issues. Moreover, bio-retention ponds are installed at the beginning of a new project to clean water before it runs into nearby Lake Taylor. And, when possible, groundskeepers use native plants. Perhaps more importantly, fertilizer is used sparingly and it’s always organic at that. The college also received a $50,000 grant from the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Department of Conservation and Recreation to install a green roof on Smithdeal Hall. Not only does this roof provide energy savings, it offers students and faculty the opportunity to conduct ongoing environmental research. Virginia Wesleyan also does a fabulous job of actively involving undergrads in the school’s environmental policies. For example, students are invited to share any and all ideas with the President’s Environmental Issues Council. Additionally, undergrads who conceive of innovative new initiatives may apply for the President’s Environmental Challenge Grant. Winners receive an impressive $2,500 prize. The college also makes a big push for recycling. And, since 2011, Virginia Wesleyan students have participated in RecycleMania. Last year, the college recycled a total of 26,966 pounds of material during the competition. Overall, Virginia Wesleyan placed a respectable 168th (with well over 600 colleges competing). Finally, to cut down on the use of personal vehicles, undergrads can take advantage of the Marlin Express, a free transportation shuttle providing rides to Norfolk and Virginia Beach!
