  • Sustainability

As one of the largest energy users in New York State, the SUNY system strives to be as energy efficient as possible. Over a decade ago, faculty, staff, and students at The College at Brockport embarked on the Green Campus Initiative to pave the way for a more sustainable future. Under the banner of this initiative, members of the College community, working alongside members of the Managing Environmental Health and Safety Committee, devised several strategies, including efficient recycling protocols, creating biodiesel from waste vegetable oil, and generating as well as using energy from renewable sources. Along the way, The College at Brockport also earned a STARS (Sustainability Tracking Assessment and Rating System) Silver rating from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education. Members of the campus community, especially students, who are curious about their environmental impact while at the College, can use a handy online calculator to determine the institution’s carbon footprint—a number that the College and the SUNY system are committed to systematically reduce. Sustainability is a core value of the Brockport Auxiliary Service Corporation (BASC), which manages the College’s dining hall, laundry, bookstore, and transportation services, among others. A variety of “green” transportation options are in place including a bike-borrowing program, a ride-share program, and a campus shuttle. Vending and laundry machines on campus are energy-efficient, and the College is in the process of deploying garbage and recycling trucks that run on clean-burning natural gas. The bookstore offers a book rental program, while campus coffee shops encourage students to use refillable mugs. Students looking for like-minded environmentalists at Brockport can join the Environmentally Conscious Organization for Society (ECOS), which aims to promote environmental awareness and activity on campus.
