  • Sustainability

It’s clearly evident that going green has become a priority for Bridgewater College. To begin with, the college has acquired an electric powered service vehicle and two electric-powered club cars for use in campus maintenance, transporting recycling, and more. Additionally, students and faculty with their own electric cars can take advantage of a charging station behind the Kline Campus Center (the first station of its kind at any school in Virginia). Of course, Bridgewater’s sustainability efforts reach far beyond transportation. Indeed, the Stone Village residence complex is LEED-certified. Moreover, new Energy Star washers and energy efficient dryers have been installed in all student housing. Perhaps most impressive, the college has replaced roughly 4,500 feet of steam line pipe systems with new piping (located within a concrete sidewalk/tunnel distribution system). This has resulted in a substantial reduction of carbon emissions, considerable fuel consumption savings, and increased efficiency. With all of these significant changes, Dining Services also became eager to join the movement. To that end, they’ve minimized the use of trays to combat food waste as well as help conserve water and energy. They’ve also started a compost program, ensuring all food waste is collected and returned to the earth. Thankfully, even BC undergrads wholeheartedly embrace the green movement. In fact, Bridgewater students have been participating in RecyleMania since 2007. And in the past two years, the college has placed first among Virginia colleges and universities in the corrugated cardboard category. If you plan on attending Bridgewater, get ready to go green!
