  • Sustainability

The University of the Pacific is committed to “creating a campus culture that advances a sustainable future among all members of the Pacific community.” Of late, the private Californian university has backed up this promise, and the milestones keep on coming. In 2009, the University Sustainability Committee was established to advise the president on the development of sustainability strategies and policies across the university. In 2011, Pacific hired its first full-time sustainability director to serve all three campuses. In 2012, Pacific established the $250,000 annual Sustainability Project Investment Fund, designed to support activities that reduce energy use, invest in projects with environmental benefits, and support sustainability-related education, engagement, and outreach activities. As you might expect, environmentally conscious practices abound at Pacific. Bon Appètit partnered with Pacific by purchasing food from sustainable and local vendors in its Farm to Fork initiative. Recycling systems exist on campus for almost every material. Wondering about green transportation? Bike racks, campus shuttles, and Zipcars are all available. Students participate in a yearly Sustainability Month, with events such as an Environmental Justice research panel, an environmental film festival, an EcoShow of sustainability-themed poetry, art, and clothing, and the ever-popular Earth Day Festival. Plus, each of the three campuses provides numerous opportunities for student involvement. The Student Sustainability Coalition, Residence for Earth and Environmental Living and Learning (REELL), Students for Environmental Action (SEA), and the Calaveras River Restoration Project represent just a few student causes. Students can study environmental studies, while simultaneously spending time in some of the green buildings on campus. The DeRosa University Center is LEED Silver-certified, and both the Chambers Technology Center and the Vereschagin Alumni House are LEED Gold-certified!
