  • Sustainability

SUNY Oswego is one college absolutely overflowing with sustainability. An ACUPCC signatory, the upstate New York green stronghold combines a rich institutional commitment to the environment with a thriving student enthusiasm towards sustainable endeavors. Its Climate Action Plan guides the Facilities Department to ensure the sustainable operation of buildings. Carefully designed residence hall showerheads, low-flow toilets, and green cleaning products are just parts of the package. The college is using on-site generation from geothermal sources. New construction must meet LEED Silver standards. Sustainability-related research is encouraged by Rice Creek Field Station, a unit that invites student proposals and is dedicated to the support of academic instruction, research, and public service in all aspects of natural history. Students can join numerous groups such as Students for Global Change—a coalition group that actively educates the campus and community about environmental and human rights issues on both global and local levels—and the “Go Green Team.” Plus, students can pursue a sustainability studies minor, with the college offering several cross-departmental courses such as environmental chemistry, environmental economics, and sustainability and human behavior. Even the cinema and screen studies program challenges students to reduce waste—this in a discipline that is regularly considered one of the ten most wasteful industries in the United States! Campus neighbors feel the impact: SUNY Oswego boasts a highly successful ACTS program designed to create real-life solutions to sustainability problems in the community in the new Shineman Center for Science, Engineering, and Innovation.
