Sustainability
Stanford University allocated more than $450 million on emission-reduction infrastructure over the past few years as part of a comprehensive energy and climate plan that has reduced the university's GHG emissions by 68% since 2011 and enabled an 18 percent savings in potable water consumption despite Stanford's nearly exponential growth. The plan targets high performance building design, resource conservation in existing buildings, and a greener energy supply. Further, that building efficiency programs have contributed to a 25% decrease in energy intensity on campus since 2000 or a 6% reduction in overall energy use. Stanford's recycling program (recognized by the EPA and a top contender in the RecycleMania competition) diverts about 65 percent of its solid waste from landfills. Stanford's Transportation Demand Management program (also recognized by the EPA) includes a "free bus system that includes 23 fully electric buses; a commute club; free/ pre-tax passes on public transportation; car rental options; commute planning assistance; charter services; and a bike program." As a result, "the percentage of Stanford employees driving alone to campus dropped from 72 to 50 percent" since 2003. Additionally, the university participates each year in the Bay Area's Bike to Work Day. In 2016,with over 2,500 Stanford riders rolling to campus, an estimated 7,353 miles of car trips and over 6,107 pounds of emissions were avoided. A partner in the university's $433 million Initiative on the Environment and Sustainability, the Woods Institute for the Environment offers an opportunity for students to research and create practical, interdisciplinary solutions to environmental challenges, among many other environmental institutes and programs on the campus.
