  • Sustainability

In recent years, the University of Tennessee—Knoxville has taken several major steps toward reducing its environmental impact while building a culture of sustainability through its comprehensive program “Make Orange Green.” UT has developed several policies aimed at reducing the institution’s environmental impact, including a broad energy conservation policy as well as the Sustainable Building Policy which makes the LEED rating system the standard for all new construction and renovation projects. Additionally, students at UT pay a “Green Fee” each semester which has been used to fund a variety of initiatives and projects on campus since 2005. In 2013–14, UT became the number one purchaser of Green e-certified renewable energy credits in the SEC, offsetting a third of its energy demand via green power. Moreover, UT has taken steps to reduce its energy demand through efficiency projects and outreach efforts such as the Power Down Pledge drive, which has garnered over 5,000 signatures. Academically, UT students can chose from over 225 of sustainability related courses across seventeen degree programs. In the fall of 2012, a Sustainability Major was established, making UT one of the first large institutions in the Southeast to offer such a program. UT students also take advantage of their close proximity to the Smoky Mountains by going on expeditions through the University of Tennessee’s Outdoor Program (UTOP). Every year, UT becomes a greener place to learn, live and work. From UT Recycling’s award winning “Green Team” of student volunteers at every home football game to UT’s Farmer’s Market, it is easy to see how UT has made Orange the New Green.
