  • Sustainability

An ACUPCC signatory, USF has incorporated sustainability into its strategic plan and coordinates its sustainability initiatives through a dedicated office of sustainability and Steering Committees. The USF Office of Sustainability implements and monitors sustainability initiatives on campus and engages in collaborative activities and events with the Tampa Bay community. USF organizes Green Job Fairs, annual Earth Day and Arbor Day events. USF is dedicated to ensuring that all new buildings achieve LEED Silver or better. The campus has five LEED certified buildings (two Gold certified), and there are several buildings in the design phase or already under construction that will pursue LEED certification. Undergraduates are taught sustainability as part of the university’s mandatory core curriculum. The Patel College of Global Sustainability offers an MA in global sustainability with specializations in water management, sustainable tourism, renewable energy and entrepreneurship. The College of Business at USF has recently added a green job component to the MBA Building Sustainable Enterprise track. The university is home to eighteen environmental student groups including Emerging Green Builders, Engineers for a Sustainable World, the Student Environmental Association, USGBC. In 2014, the students at USF approved to continue the student green fee for another 3 years. This is used to fund energy efficiency and renewable energy projects and reduce the campus’ carbon footprint. The Student Green Energy Fund has so far allocated over $1.5 million for sustainable projects in the campus which include a smart GPS based bike share program, a smart parking guidance system, biodiesel generation and building monitoring systems. Students at USF get access to bike sharing program free of charge, free bus passes, universal access transit passes, and sharing rides through social networking (ZimRide), perks that save money and reduce single-driver car rides.
