  • Sustainability

In keeping with its mission, “Connecting Learning, Life, and Community,” Linfield College aims to mitigate the effects of global warming in the Pacific region through a combination of education, campus life, and community outreach. The college has signed the ACUPCC and completed a green house gas inventory and climate action plan. Linfield’s Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability Assistant along with the President’s Advisory Committee on the Environment and Sustainability (ACES) direct the college’s sustainability effort Linfield’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint include the implementation of various energy conservation projects on campus. More than 79 percent of campus buildings use natural gas for heating and hot water. Over the past ten years, the college has saved an amount of natural gas that is the equivalent of the amount of electricity used in almost 700 homes over the course of a year. The carbon footprint resulting from natural gas use is completely offset, totaling 44 percent of Linfield’s carbon footprint. Linfield has required all major capital projects must pursue LEED Silver (including a completed $7.9 million project that turned TJ Day Hall into a state-of-the-art LEED Silver facility). Energy Star certified appliances will be purchased whenever possible. The college has adopted a campus composting program, a pre-orientation program focused on sustainable living and has renovated the observatory on campus into a sustainability hub. The student organization, Greenfield, is devoted to environmental and sustainability issues. Other opportunities for student engagement include a sustainable agriculture internship program, the Linfield Garden and an alternative spring break program focused on sustainability.
