Sustainability
The University of Minnesota—Duluth is a signatory of the ACUPCC. Additionally, the university has opened its fifth LEED-certified building on campus. Ianni Hall is home to a new Sustainability Living Learning Community: a floor of students who live and learn together through a shared Freshman Seminar course that focuses on sustainability. The facility is LEED Platinum and supports education and research work in Bagley Nature Area, a 55-acre green space on campus. Every existing building has received at least lighting upgrades in the last few years. The university has installed several small rain garden and biofiltration areas, two green roofs, pervious pavement, and many alternative plantings that replace maintenance-intensive sod. Through a partnership with the Duluth Transit Authority, UMD provides over 500,000 rides per year for students, faculty, and staff around the Twin Ports area. UMD Bike to Campus program provides RFID tags to bike commuters and tracks miles ridden, calories burned, and greenhouse gas emissions avoided. The UMD Solar Research Project produces renewable energy atop Malosky Stadium. Additional solar photovoltaic panels are in place on the Bagley Outdoor Classroom and on eight solar-powered trash compactors on campus. Sustainable land management efforts include an experiment in edible landscaping, featuring an herb garden, an antioxidant garden, and a quinoa garden. The Natural Resources Research Institute at UMD fosters economic development of Minnesota’s natural resources in an environmentally sound manner. A recent success of the institute is the thermal modification of locally-grown wood species. The research aims to make local species of wood more attractive for a variety of uses.
