Sustainability
“To be at home in all lands and all ages; to count Nature a familiar acquaintance.” These words open “The Offer of the College,” defining the vision of education at Bowdoin, a vision just as relevant today as when it was first penned in 1906. An ACUPCC signatory and a STARS participant, the college annually submits greenhouse gas emissions data to the ACUPCC and has made a commitment to become carbon neutral by 2020. To that end, Bowdoin has implemented changes in campus energy consumption, using renewable energy resources and reducing campus heating emissions to less than 1990 levels—despite significant campus growth! In 2014 Bowdoin signed a power purchase agreement on a 1,200-kilowatt solar installation located partly on campus athletic facilities as well as college owned land a few miles from the central campus. The solar PV system is the largest in the state of Maine. Bowdoin has also developed a comprehensive approach to alternative transportation on campus, including a bike-sharing program, a car-sharing program, a campus rideshare app, and an increased emphasis on biking infrastructure on campus. The college has also built a campus-managed organic garden that provides academic and co-curricular opportunities for students. The environmental studies program offers students a variety of service learning opportunities with organizations in Brunswick and the larger Maine community, maintaining a research facility on Kent Island as well as at Bowdoin's Coastal Studies Center on Orr's Island. Bowdoin is committed to ensuring that all new construction and major renovation projects will seek LEED certification. Finally, Bowdoin coordinated an inter-dorm recycling competition to promote awareness of campus recycling initiatives.
