Sustainability
The College of St. Benedict/St. John’s University is making great efforts to reduce the school’s environmental footprint. To begin with, CSB/SJU maintains a robust recycling and composting program, and all food waste from dining services is diverted to feeding hogs. As if that wasn’t impressive enough, in 2012, 126 tons (yes tons!) of recyclables were recovered. This includes paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, and cans. The school has pledged to achieve climate neutrality by the year 2035. With that pledge in mind, St. John’s is investing in renewable energy. For example, the university is home to the St. John’s Abbey Energy Farm. The farm consists of over 1,800 solar modules, produces 575,000 kilowatt hours annually (which is enough to power sixty-five American homes), produces 15 percent more energy than a static panel and helps the campus avoid over 400 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. Beyond renewable energy, CSB/SJU also champions the aptly titled program “Goodwill, not Landfill”: At the end of each academic year, the school places boxes at the end of each residence hall where students can place their unwanted (but still useable!) goods. These items are then picked up by Catholic Charities and delivered to folks in need. In 2013 alone, a whopping 31,220 pounds of food, clothing and school supplies were donated. Not too shabby!
