Sustainability
The University of Illinois at Springfield openly wants to “be a role model in promoting campus sustainability.” To get there, UIS has several campus initiatives such as designing all new buildings with LEED building standards. Existing campus buildings are having their inefficient light bulbs swapped out, and the university has committed almost two million dollars to retrofitting single-glazed windows with double-glazed windows in order to reduce energy consumption. Each November, the University of Illinois at Springfield hosts a Sustainability Week with events such as reusable Clamshell giveaways, an e-waste drive, and the screening of important environmental documentaries like Gasland 2. In April, UIS hosts a number of events related to Earth Day, including a keynote speaker and educational programming open to the local community. In 2008, the Founders Residence Hall’s roof was turned green. This rooftop greenery covers 26,000 feet, reduces heating and cooling costs, and even helps with noise pollution. UIS recycles 76 tons of material each year and plans to expand its efforts even further. , but it is expanding its efforts even further after receiving a $27,550 matching grant from the state of Illinois. To do their part, students are encouraged to sign a sustainability pledge that will act as a daily reminder of how everyone’s actions affect the planet we call home. Students can also join the Green Stars program, a mailing service that sends regular updates on sustainability issues, tips, and campus events. Especially green-minded students will want to check out Students Allied for a Greener Earth (SAGE). SAGE is a part of the Department of Environmental Studies but open to all students, staff, and faculty on campus. The Campus Senate has also created a Committee on Sustainability to lead efforts in creating a greener campus.
