Sustainability
Nestled between the Santa Monica Mountains and the Oxnard Plain, California State University, Channel Islands is a school surrounded by nature. The campus encompasses over 1,000 acres and is mere minutes away from the Pacific Ocean. The school’s sustainability efforts are geared toward seeing how environmental issues interact with social, economic, and societal issues. Since the campus is surrounded by farmland, over 60 percent of the food on campus is purchased within a few hundred miles of campus. Out of that, 90 percent of fish served meet Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch standards and 100 percent of the coffee on campus is certified by the Rainforest Alliance. While the school’s bike sharing program is currently in development, California State University, Channel Islands already provides plenty of bike racks around campus to encourage this environmentally friendly means of transportation. Recently, the school installed six hydration stations around campus for students to refill their water bottles and reduce plastic waste. Since the first station installation, the school estimates that they have eliminated over 11,500 plastic water bottles! The university has also installed six rainwater collection barrels to further increase the sustainability of water on campus. The bachelor of science in environmental science and resource management is the school’s undergraduate program in sustainability. The university’s commitment to being a green school is evidenced by the fact that its AASHE STARS score jumped from 60 to 85 between 2013 and 2014.
