  • Sustainability

Along with the other universities in the California system, the University of California— Santa Cruz is dedicated to cutting greenhouse gas emissions, greening its design and construction projects on campus, and integrating sustainability at every institutional level. Within the university, the Sustainability Office created the first map detailing how the campus is used as a sustainability “living lab” and led a campus wide Chancellor’s Sustainability Campaign to Reduce Waste. Already, the campus boasts a 62 percent waste-diversion rate and gets five percent of its energy from renewable sources. Facilities services are also becoming more environmentally responsible using 84 percent Green Seal-certified cleaning products. These impressive numbers are leading the campus towards its goal of zero-waste by 2020. The Sustainability Office and the student-run Campus Sustainability Council offers internships, green events, and the opportunity to serve on sustainability working groups. Both organizations also provide grants to students, staff and faculty in support of sustainability initiatives. Among the many student organizations on campus are the Student Environmental Center, Friends of the Community Agroecology Network, the Campus Sustainability Council, California Public Interest Research Group, the PowerSave Campus Program, California Student Sustainability Coalition, Education for Sustainable Living Program, Gaia Magazine, and the Program in Community and Agroecology. UCSC has been awarded several honors in recognition of its sustainability efforts, including making the top 20 of the Sierra Club’s list of the Coolest (read: greenest) Schools.
