Sustainability
At Rollins College, the school’s sustainability motto is from “sustainability to walkability” and has gone above and beyond in their pursuit of that goal. To begin with, Rollins is actively embracing renewable energy. For example, the Bush Science Center features multiple heat recovery wheels that allow the school to save up to 70 percent of the energy associated with the heating, cooling, and dehumidification. Photovoltaic solar panels also help minimize the school’s demand on energy resources. Rollins has also stepped up its eco-friendly game when it comes to transportation. Recent construction ensures the school is excessively bike and pedestrian friendly, with bike racks located across campus. Students or faculty who don’t have their own bikes can participate in the Rollins Bicycle Library Program. Now in its fifth year, the program features a fleet of twenty-seven bicycles, which can be borrowed for up to three days at a time. And this past spring, Rollins was declared a Fair Trade campus after passing a Fair Trade Resolution agreeing to purchase sustainable and fairly traded products whenever possible. Eager to follow protocol, campus dining services endeavors to buy food from socially responsible companies such as Honest Tea, Alta Gracia Clothing and Ben and Jerry’s. Moreover, all Styrofoam cups, lids and straws have been removed from dining halls and replaced with biodegradable products. A reusable take-out program is available, and the school has installed thirty-one hydration stations, which have saved almost 350,000 bottles of water in only two years. Undergrads wishing to get in on the environmental action may join the student organization EcoRollins and get involved with the student-run Sustainability Program. To date, the program has launched the single-stream recycling system that’s implemented throughout the campus. It’s also established a living learning house, and is working on building a community garden in nearby Winter Park. The house maintains an organic vegetable garden, a solar lighted walk path, rain barrels and above ground garden boxes for herbs and medicinal plants.
