Sustainability
The State University of New York at Purchase has set the ambitious goal of reducing its energy use intensity 20 percent by 2020 per Executive Order 88. To meet the goal, the College has compiled a comprehensive energy master plan of energy efficiency and renewable energy projects. The campus has also sub-metered most buildings to measure electric consumption and hired a Senior Energy Manager to focus on energy and sustainability issues. The Energy Manager is part of a larger campus effort; the sustainability committee, which consists of students and faculty/staff, that make decisions about Green Fee Fund requests. To reduce its building’s carbon footprint, the school is constructing a LEED Silver building, installing energy-efficient equipment, installing a green roof, and reclaiming construction debris for use in other projects, (over 490 tons of debris was reclaimed this year). To reduce transportation’s carbon footprint, the school offers a variety of alternatives including Zimride’s and Purpool’s online carpool systems, two Zipcars and seven electric vehicles. In addition, during the semester, over 25 employees live on campus, which reduces vehicle emissions created by commuting. To reduce its purchasing carbon footprint, the college purchases green cleaning products, recycled paper and more than 20 percent of its food from local vendors. Purchase’s dining service recycled over nine tons of kitchen grease, reduced food waste through tray-less dining and its Trim-Trax program which tracks, measures and reduces kitchen waste. Academically, the school currently offers a major and a minor in Environmental Studies, which educate students in critical thinking both about the origins of environmental problems and the building blocks of environmental solutions.
