Sustainability
Students can help save the environment both inside and outside the classroom at Muhlenberg, thanks in large part to the work of the college’s Office of Campus Sustainability. Bringing together student, faculty, and staff, the office’s goal is to facilitate the link between academic and facilities-based sustainability efforts, support campus environmental groups, and create internship opportunities, often through reaching out for external funding. Students looking to pursue a career in an environmental or other sustainability-based field can do so through its unique academic program in Sustainability Studies. In this program, students from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds come together to explore innovative ways to solve environmental problems. Included in the program are numerous experiential opportunities either locally, or in programs sites in Bangladesh, China, and Costa Rica. Beyond the classroom, students can choose to live in the Sustainability House, help run the community garden, participate in Student Government to push for campus-wide green initiatives, and join the Environmental Action Team (EnAct). There are yearly dorm competitions targeted at reducing electrical consumption, as well as Earth Day celebrations. A major part of the Muhlenberg College Strategic Plan is the ongoing process of replacing desktop computers with at least 85 percent EPEAT Gold-rated hardware—referring to a global environmental ratings system that ranks “green” computers—as well as replacing steam-to-water converters with a gas-fired heating system, and conducting detailed energy audits for all campus buildings. In fact, students are trained to conduct these energy audits. The recent renovation of East Hall dorm updated the existing structure rather than tearing down and building from scratch, and materials, such as bluestone, slate, and rough sawn timber, were locally sourced.
