Sustainability
As a constituent college of the State University of New York (SUNY) school system, SUNY Fredonia abides by the rigorous green standards of the SUNY system. For example, the state of New York mandates that all new buildings are built to at least LEED Silver standards and that they improve energy efficiency 35 percent from 2009 levels by 2015. The campus has also made a commitment to go carbon neutral via the ACUPCC. SUNY Fredonia’s most recent AASHE STARS rating is bronze, and the school is a signee of the United Nations Sustainability Declaration. Dining services at SUNY Fredonia aim to provide locally grown and FTO-certified foods at competitive prices. SUNY Fredonia goes out of its way to help students have a green college experience. Every room on campus has a recycling bin, and the school hosts a Campus and Community Household Electronic Recycling Day in April. Students at SUNY Fredonia have access to cheap public transportation— local buses are only a quarter for students—as well as free university shuttles. The University’s “Freshmen Green15” guide gives new students tips on how to be environmentally friendly and lists the fifteen green things to bring to college such as a stainless steel water bottle, eco laundry detergent, organic deodorant, and bamboo headphones.
