  • Sustainability

Located just miles from the majestic Niagara Falls, Niagara University has a special appreciation for the natural environment. Where else could a college senior earn not one but two community service awards for revitalizing a once-forgotten Niagara Falls Park? In fact, the business management major’s renovation of the park—located in a prime tourism corridor not far from the national landmark—was inspired by a Niagara University business professor! This type of cross-curriculum collaboration among students, faculty, and the community is emblematic of NU’s wholehearted commitment to “incorporate sustainability into the Life of NU.” To achieve that, NU has outlined a thorough set of goals that include developing new sustainability-related educational programs, environmentally responsible practices, energy conservation, recycling, green building project initiatives, and a conscientious self-evaluation of what Niagara is doing to protect the environment. The campus boasts both a LEED Gold-certified, 50,000-square-foot integrated science center and the Dwyer Ice Arena, which is equipped with 25-kilowatt roof solar panels. Bike racks, a new bike path and bike share program, a free shuttle bus, and a new electric vehicle for facilities services show NU’s commitment to green transportation. The university has policies in place to use only green cleaning products and recycled paper, and a whopping 98 percent of NU’s electricity is purchased from a hydroelectric generator! With all its green initiatives, it seems NU’s plan to go carbon neutral by 2050 is more reality than dream. Thanks to Earth Day Events and ReNU Niagara’s community outreach program, students always have a chance to play an active part!
