  • Sustainability

With its commitment to going green, SCSU is earning the nickname “Sustainable Southern.” At SCSU, a charter ACUPCC signatory since 2007, sustainability means engaging everyone from students to faculty, staff, and administration to “make healthy and environmentally conscious decisions in all aspects of campus life.” Students have opportunities to partake in initiatives such as the Sustainable Living Learning Community, the Geography/ Sustainability Club, Campus Conservation Nationals, RecycleMania, student-run events throughout the year, and more. Student volunteers manage the campus community garden, and most of the produce is donated to area soup kitchens. In the spirit of a sustainability-friendly atmosphere, the buildings at SCSU fit the bill. Brownell Residential Hall and the School of Business both have 50KW solar systems on their roofs. The Campus Energy Center produces heat for the entire university with natural gas. All major new construction is required to meet LEED Silver standards. Southern's brand new state-of-the-art science laboratory building is scheduled to open in Spring, 2015 with at least LEED Silver certification anticipated. The new School of Business building earned LEED Gold certification in 2012. Students won’t need to go out of their way to get involved. Sustainability is integrated into everyday life on campus. Refillable water stations are new throughout campus as of Fall 2014, and SCSU’s Dining Services has become more environmentally friendly through trayless dining, cage-free eggs, and a commitment to buying locally-grown produce. What’s more, the campus bookstore has championed recent initiatives such as selling a large line of recyclable products—including notebooks, biodegradable plastic folders, sketchbooks created with recycled vinyl albums, and t-shirts made from recycled bottles— promoting the use of e-textbooks to save paper, and even providing graduation gowns made of 100 percent recycled plastic bottles! The Werth Center for Coastal and Marine Studies provides a range of research opportunities, and students can have their commitment to a sustainable world permanently etched into their degree: SCSU offers an Environmental Studies minor for any undergraduate major, and a Sustainability concentration as part of the Geography major.
