Sustainability
Central Connecticut State University is certainly a leader in the sustainability movement. In fact, the school was one of the first signatories of the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment way back in 2007. And CCSU proudly and steadfastly maintains its continued commitment to this area. For example, the university formulated a Climate Action Plan (CAP) with the aim of achieving climate neutrality by 2050. Built into that overarching goal are interim reduction goals. By 2015, CCSU hopes to achieve a 20 percent reduction from 2008 levels. And by 2025, the university aims to have reached a 50 percent reduction. In order to meet these figures, CCSU has begun to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the construction of a state-of-the-art Energy Center and a 1.4 MW Fuel Cell. The university also purchases renewable energy credits. CCSU invests in numerous building retrofits to ensure facilities are as efficient as possible. And they have begun implementing campus-wide educational initiatives. Hydration Stations have been placed in Residence Halls and Administrative buildings, reducing plastic bottle use by over 10,000 bottles a month. Central Connecticut also participates in the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Game Day Challenge. The goal of the competition is to reduce waste generated at college football games. It also aims to increase awareness and participation in waste reduction programs. CCSU put forth a valiant effort in 2011 and 2013, when the university was champion of the “Waste Minimization” category (meaning they had the least amount of waste generate per attendee). And with the school’s continued efforts, we’re confident they’ll be a champion again!
