  • Sustainability

As a Jesuit university in Jersey City, New Jersey, Saint Peter’s University sees its responsibility toward sustainability as an ethical one: “Caring for our home—the earth—is core to Catholic Social Teaching and Jesuit ministry…. In the words of Pope Benedict XVI, ‘The environment is God’s gift to everyone, and in our use of it we have a responsibility toward the poor, toward future generations, and towards humanity as a whole.’” As such, the university’s Sustainability Council oversees sustainability practices and arranges programs that foster awareness of greening on campus and beyond. In terms of curriculum, the university offers both a new undergraduate major in environmental science, and a major in biology with a concentration in environmental science. Outside the classroom, sustainability-oriented student groups include SAVE: Students Against Violating the Earth and Junk Yard Dogs. In addition, the new 90,000-foot MacMahon Student Center is LEED Silver-certified. Previous green projects at Saint Peter’s include the implementation of 100 percent renewable energy generated by wind power as the sole source of purchased electricity. In 2008, President Cornacchia also joined more than 640 others in signing the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment (ACUPCC) to acknowledge that the University will continue to be an early adopter of environmentally friendly solutions. With this current initiative, Saint Peter’s is setting the standard for green energy performance in the education arena by installing clean technology that will reduce its carbon emissions by 6.4 million pounds per year. This will equate to the carbon saving benefits of a 615-acre pin forest. With the completion of this project, initiatives will continue and expand beyond the West Campus. In 2014, Saint Peter’s won the Garden State GreenFest “Boggie” Award for being the most sustainable college or university in New Jersey..
