  • Sustainability

Edgewood College has proudly placed itself at the forefront of the sustainability movement. Of course, that’s no surprise given that the school is a Founding Circle member of the Billion Dollar Green Challenge, a revolving fund that offers financing for sustainability projects around campus. Among the many environmental steps Edgewood has taken is the construction of Dominican Hall, a dorm that was the first LEED Silver-certified residence hall in the state of Wisconsin. Fortunately, the college didn’t stop there. The Visual and Theater Arts Center has achieved LEED Gold certification. This environmental gem features rain gardens, a geothermal heating and cooling system, extensive natural lighting, and high-efficiency fixtures. And there’s plenty of environmental action happening elsewhere on campus as well. For example, Phil’s Cafeteria (a campus dining facility) has earned Green Restaurant Certification. The café provides scrumptious locally sourced food, supplemented by both a kitchen garden and a hoop house. Perhaps even more importantly, Edgewood requires undergraduates to take at least one course pertaining to environmental perspectives. Classes are available on a range of topics, from sustainability to “Eco-fiction.” Finally, students and faculty alike are encouraged to go green on their commutes. They can take advantage of a free shuttle and free bus passes for the Madison Metro bus. As if the free passes weren’t incentive enough, individuals who participate in the Alternative Transportation Program are eligible for gym discounts, free campus meals, and even personal time off. With perks like that who could say no to going green?
