  • Sustainability

Ambitious and forward-thinking, Virginia’s Randolph College has committed to pursue zero-waste and zero emissions in the coming years. Using engaging, inventive practices, the college is already making strides in the direction of sustainability. Last year, Randolph teamed up with four other institutions to become the first group in its electricity territory to be allowed to buy from a company producing electricity from emission-free resources only. Academically, Randolph already offers a BA in environmental studies and a BS in environmental sciences, requires all undergraduate students to take a course in its “Global Issues” family, which relates to sustainability. The college earns especially high marks in terms of transportation solutions: a fleet of bikes is available free of charge for students to check out during daylight hours; the college offers lockers, showers, and bike storage; a free hourly shuttle service (which has fourteen seats and always departs full) to local attractions is offered on Fridays and weekends; the campus coordinates its own carpooling program; and it is launching a partnership with a regional ride-sharing program called RIDE Solutions. To minimize commuting impact for faculty and staff, Randolph owns houses next to campus and offers them for rent to employees before marketing them generally. In addition to encouraging recycling and composting, the college collects and donates old furniture to charities, and when economically comparable, dining services purchase as much locally grown and organic food as possible. Looking ahead, Randolph’s Climate Action plan aims to purchase low- or zero-emission vehicles, while the college continues to manage campus grounds in an environmentally friendly manner, install renewable energy sources, build every new structure according to LEED Silver standards, and build campus awareness and engagement.
