Sustainability
"In 2009, Radford University became a signatory of the American College & University Presidents’ Climate Commitment, pledging to pursue net carbon neutrality and to provide students with the knowledge and skills required to understand and be successful in meeting the challenges of the 21st Century. The Sustainability Office employs 1 full time staff member, up to six student employees, and up to ten student interns. Additionally, the Sustainability Manager works with the Sustainability Steering Committee to advance the Climate Action Plan, Campus Sustainability Policy, and Carbon Commitment. The University received the Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star certification for six buildings, and currently has 10 buildings with LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Certification, 9 Gold and 1 Silver, with two additional buildings pending. Every building on campus is sub-metered for electricity, water, and steam, allowing for close monitoring and resource conservation. Additionally, recycling is available in all buildings and public transportation is free for employees and students.Students have a wide range of opportunities to engage with sustainability on campus. The Sustainability Office provides internship and employment opportunities, as well as support for independent study and capstone projects. Many student organizations exist to or focus on sustainability on campus in their operations. The Undergraduate Certificate in Sustainability & Environmental Studies provides an opportunity for students to earn an academic credential for sustainability and sustainability principles are taught in approximately 163 courses."
