  • Sustainability

It seems like every year Purdue is boiling up new sustainability initiatives. All campus programs have one thing in mind—minimizing the university’s impact on the environment. In March of 2013, Purdue University achieved a Silver rating from AASHE (Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education), on its inaugural submission to STARS (Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System). Grassroots initiatives are also sprouting up thanks to a proactive student body. For instance, the Black & Gold & Green Tailgate Team’s student volunteers worked hard to reach a 45 percent diversion rate in the tailgate lots of Purdue’s home football games in 2013. Purdue’s students also maintain the Purdue Student Sustainability Council, the Purdue Energy Forum, and Full Circle Agriculture at Purdue to name a few. But even with all of these measures in place, the green treasure on this campus has to be the state-of-the-art France A. Cordova Recreational Sports Center (CoRec). With approximately 338,000 square feet of recreational space, the CoRec facility integrates green technologies and strategies to meet the fitness, wellness, and recreation needs of Purdue’s students. In line with the “living laboratory” approach outlined in Purdue’s Sustainability Strategic Plan, an exciting new experiential learning course that focuses on LEED for Existing Buildings: Operations and Maintenance (LEED-EB: O+M) has been developed. Jerry S. Rawls Hall was the first building on campus to go through this student led LEED-EB: O+M process. Students are also working on achieving LEED-EB: O+M certification for the Dick and Sandy Dauch Alumni Center.
