  • Sustainability

Ohio University in Athens is a big school with a lot of swagger when it comes to greening its campus. Ohio University has a long and storied responsible waste management history. The national RecycleMania competition was founded by the former Ohio University and Miami University recycling managers. Ohio University often wins national waste management competitions such as this year’s win in the Diversion division of the GameDay Recycling Challenge. Ohio University also owns and operates the largest in-vessel composter (6 tons/day) of any college or university in the United States and provides annual reuse opportunities such as the Earth Day Reuse and Repair Fair, the Move Out event and the ReBike sale. Researchers at Ohio University develop innovative processes such as the “Acid Mine Drainage to Pigment” Civil Engineering/College of Fine Arts/Rural Action (community non-profit) collaboration which cleans acid-mine drainage contaminated local streams while creating art pigment as a product, or the Department of Energy-funded, Mechanical Engineering-industry collaboration to create new low-carbon emitting uses for Appalachian coal such as construction composite building materials. Office of Sustainability’s new (as of 2019) Sustainability Hubs are creating engagement ecosystems which use the campus and community as a living laboratory. Major initiatives include a Sustainability Project Laboratory, a Climate & Sustainability Ambassador program, an expanded OHIO Student Farm, and a Farm to OHIO working group. These initiatives offer a myriad of ways for students to contribute to environmental and sustainability efforts at Ohio University.
