  • Sustainability

The Ohio State University integrates sustainable practices and programming across academics, research, operations, administration and engagement. As a flagship public institution, Ohio State’s Discovery Themes of Energy and Environment, Food Production, and Security and Health and Wellness benefit the university and its stakeholders by harnessing leading-edge research, attracting world-class faculty and students to solve the world’s most compelling challenges. Currently, 450 faculty are engaged in energy, sustainability and climate research and a share of the $400 million Discovery Theme investment will be used to hire an additional 500 faculty by 2022. Ohio State offers hundreds of sustainability courses and boasts an undergraduate major in sustainability. In addition to being an ACUPCC signatory, Ohio State has obtained a STARS Silver rating for its five campuses. Ohio State was awarded the 2014 EPA Green Power Partner of the Year for its wind power purchase and named Big Ten EPA Green Power Conference Champion twice, using more green power than any Big Ten university. Ohio State uses several renewable energy sources including solar panels, wind turbines, heat wheels, geothermal systems and biofuel and hybrid electric buses. Ohio Stadium’s Zero Waste program won the National Gameday Recycling Championship two consecutive years achieving a 98.5 percent diversion rate. The university composts 100 percent of landscaping waste, and 72 percent of Ohio State’s undergraduate students use alternative modes of transportation. Columbus has three Gold and nine Silver LEED-certified buildings, and the $1.1 billion Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center expansion (pending LEED Silver certification) will revitalize research, education and patient care, along with infrastructure and green spaces that will fundamentally change the future of health care. Health and wellness features include a tobacco free campus and multiple programs and resources that foster physical and mental well-being. Ohio State and its partners are committed to enhancing the surrounding community including restoration of the Southside neighborhood to its former glory.
