  • Sustainability

These days, Indiana State University’s impressive commitment to sustainability might be one of its proudest features—that’s saying something for an institution that boasts world-champion and Hall of Fame basketball player Larry Bird as one of its most famous alumni. A signatory of the ACUPCC and a STARS Silver school, ISU has already reduced its current carbon emissions to 53 percent of 1990 levels. ISU firmly believes that environmental, economic, and social sustainability comprise a “triple bottom line” standard of ethical responsibility, but the administration is not alone in its green-thinking philosophy. In a campus survey with more than 1,600 responses, 80 percent of the members of the entire campus community indicated concern about conservation and sustainability issues. ISU has a strong culture of experiential learning, so expect to get your hands dirty and get outside of the classroom if you’re taking sustainability courses here! For the first time in Fall 2014, ISU offered a minor in sustainability and is gradually adding more sustainability-focused courses, building toward a major in sustainability. Currently, students can choose an earth and environmental systems or human and environmental safety major, and there are numerous sustainability-related student groups, including a Food Recovery Network chapter, the Environmental Science Club, the Sustainability Committee of Residence Life, and the Sycamore Environmental Action Club. Several exciting new campus initiatives include the availability of Enterprise CarShare cars rentable for $7.50 an hour (including gas and insurance), a regional conference in Fall 2014 that drew 200 people to discuss sustainability as national security, and the continuous expansion of the 150-plot campus community garden. For those interested in alternative energy, ISU installed a rare helix-shaped wind turbine on campus, uniquely adapted for urban environments; this turbine is available for student research projects. Indiana State University understands that a commitment to sustainability extends beyond the campus grounds. To that end, the ISU’s Institute for Community Sustainability (ICS) is deployed as a comprehensive effort to integrate all of the sustainability efforts on campus and in the Wabash Valley. For example, ICS has recently partnered with local community organizations and schools to build seven “sister” educational greenhouses in the county. ICS works collaboratively with governmental, business, and nonprofit neighbors, using the community as a living laboratory for best practices in sustainability.
