Sustainability
A progressive Mennonite liberal arts college in Northern Indiana, Goshen College is guided by a Christian theology of earthkeeping. This mission pervades the college’s sustainability practices. Goshen’s Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center—a 1,189-acre nature sanctuary where students observe management practices in agriculture as well as wetland, prairie, and savanna restorations—seems to aggregate the school’s commitment to sustainability. It houses Indiana’s first LEED Platinum-certified facility, Rieth Village, which hosts immersive programs for Goshen undergrads in sustainability leadership and agroecology, a master’s program in environmental education, public programs, K-12 programs and the Sustainability Leadership Semester. In addition, Goshen signed the President’s Climate Commitment in 2007, committing the college to aspire to climate neutrality, and forming an Ecological Stewardship Committee comprised of faculty, administrators, and students to advance this commitment. Their work has been notable: the college has reduced campus-wide gas use by 31 percent and electric use by 17 percent over the last six years, even while increasing the actual square footage of buildings by 20 percent. Goshen purchases 100 percent of its electricity from renewable energy sources. Academically, eco-minded Goshen undergrads may choose concentrations in agroecology, sustainability, or environmental studies, as well as in traditional science curricula. The Ecological Stewardship Committee invites ongoing proposals from students that address ecological, economically efficient, and educational sustainability advancement opportunities. Goshen’s student dining contractor, AVI Foodsystems, fosters distinct initiatives to reduce landfill and food waste, and conserve energy, and Goshen recently restored 12 acres of lawn to native prairie grasses. For the green-oriented student with a spiritual ethos, Goshen provides a unique array of dynamic and immersive ecological learning opportunities.
