Sustainability
Albion College remains fervently committed to maintaining a green campus. Indeed, in an effort to underscore its importance, the college chose sustainability as a key theme for its new strategic plan. And it’s a theme that colors all facets of school life—from career fairs and film series to dining halls and facilities. More specifically, Albion is in the process of updating campus lighting to ensure it is environmentally friendly and economically efficient. When this work is completed, the college anticipates a reduction of carbon emissions by 650.79 tons (or 3,254 trees). Additionally, Albion’s science complex has been awarded LEED Silver certification. This amazing facility features a parking lot with recharging stations for electric cars, landscape that utilizes native species, and a design that uses 30 percent less energy than a comparable building (saving a whopping $150,000 in the process). Of course, the college also impresses upon its students the significance of green living. To that end, Albion mandates an environmental “category requirement” for all undergrads. This curriculum requirement has led to the development of over twenty environmental courses spread throughout the sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities. These classes are certainly striking a chord as many students can be found working on the college-owned organic farm. Undergrads have also established an environmentally themed dorm known as the E-house. And, perhaps most impressive, using a $10,000 grant from the EPA, a small team of students designed and installed modified bicycles and rowing machines that could convert an individual’s expended calories into electrical energy.
