Sustainability
The Sustainability Initiative of Aquinas College seeks to improve the health of the environment, enhance the quality of life for campus community members and their neighbors, and improve the financial stability of the college through a variety of projects proposed by members of the Aquinas community. Successes include the opening of four LEED-certified buildings: the second floor of the Academic Building, the Grace Hauenstein Library, Ravine Apartment D, and the renovated Sturrus Sports and Fitness Center. In addition, two buildings are currently registered with the USGBC, seeking LEED Certification. Creative Dining Services, a contracted food service provider, implemented a local food program that buys as much produce as possible from local Michigan farmers. A Sustainable Food Purchasing Policy is also in development. Elsewhere on campus, the Physical Plant Department has completed the decentralization of the boiler systems, installing more efficient boilers in each campus building with Direct Digital Controls. A portion of outdoor campus lighting has been upgraded from high pressure sodium to LED. A newly established Green Revolving Fund will surely result in additional energy conserving and renewable energy projects on campus. Aquinas is in the process of integrating sustainability issues into the curriculum, and offers an undergraduate program in sustainable business, the first of its kind in the United States. Additionally, the college offers a masters of management with a concentration in sustainable business and a master’s degree in sustainable business. Finally, Aquinas is committed to achieving zero municipal solid waste. To reach this lofty goal, the school has added composting crocks in apartments, installing new waste stations and removal of trash cans from classrooms. Aquinas’ zero waste program includes electronics, Goodwill collection, composting, TerraCycle, Styrofoam, ink cartridges, batteries, plastic, glass, tin, and paper, all contributing to a diversion rate of 79 percent.
