Sustainability
In terms of both course offerings and campus practices, Worcester State University is implementing green strategies with speed and efficacy. Partially because Massachusetts state laws are increasingly going green, all WSU buildings are operated and maintained sustainably, and in addition to the two existing LEED Gold-certified buildings on campus, the university began construction in 2013 on a new athletic facility and residence hall with dining hall that will be LEED Gold as well; another 836,522 square feet of campus building space is LEED Silver. One of WSU’s residence halls runs a cogeneration unit, and the university has two on-site solar arrays totaling 152 kilowatts. The university purchases EPEAT Gold and Energy Star-rated technology products, has reduced paper waste by charging $0.10/ page for printing services, and meters energy consumption in all campus buildings. WSU contributes to the Worcester Consortium shuttle, which travels between local schools and other locations of interest, meaning students can use it gratis; WSU also participates in NuRides, which coordinates carpools. For faculty, the school offers an option to condense the work week to four days in order to reduce commuting vehicle emissions. WSU’s climate action plan is integrating teaching sustainability into its curriculum, the Chemistry and Physical and Earth Sciences departments are already engaged in sustainability research, and sustainability-oriented course offerings include green chemistry and environmental chemistry. The Environmental Advocacy Group (EAG) for students helped to implement singlestream recycling on campus, among other measures. WSU’s ambitious plans for the future include diverting landfill waste through RecycleMania, new hydration stations, composting food waste, and switching to LED lighting.
