  • Sustainability

    Wittenberg University is certainly serious about sustainability. To begin with, the school has pledged to cut energy consumption 20 percent by 2020. Moreover, Wittenberg maintains a large and successful recycling program. In fact, last year the university managed to recycle 49,000 pounds of material. The school also runs a successful food co-op, providing locally sourced, fairly traded, organic products such as honey, bread, apples, turkeys, and coffee. Many of these items are purchased from folks in the surrounding community, thus helping the local economy as well. There's also a lot of environmental action to be found beyond university initiatives. Indeed, Wittenberg students are eager to embrace the sustainability movement as well. Many participate in campus-wide events like the annual Residence Hall Energy Reduction Competition. Academically, there are plenty of environmental themed courses in which undergrads can enroll. For example, they can take classes like Global Climate Change, Watershed Hydrology, Science in Social Context, Topics in Physical Geology: Sustainable Earth, and Environmental and Natural Resource Economics. Finally, a select number of Wittenberg undergrads can easily get their green on should they choose to live in the EcoHouse. Before moving in, students must agree to recycle, record and reduce their energy consumption, purchase organic, or local items and pursue carpooling (or alternative transportation options) whenever possible. Additionally, they must help maintain an onsite garden and compost bin. With all of these opportunities, we think it's safe to say that Wittenberg undergrads are making an important impact!
