Sustainability
The student passion for sustainability at Whitman College is evidenced by the number of green student groups on campus. Among the many groups are the Green Leaders, who promote green student living, the Organic Garden, which provides organic and locally grown food, and Campus Climate Challenge, a group that conducts campaigns on campus such as banning the sale of bottled water and pushing for divestment from fossil fuel corporations. Some recent successes from Whitman groups and clubs include a new community supported agriculture (CSA) plot by Student Agriculture at Whitman (SAW), which sells produce to Bon Appetit for use in campus dining meals. Located in Walla Walla, Washington, Whitman has a cozy 117-acre campus that is ideal for walking or biking around. The school says that most students have bicycles, and those who don’t can utilize the school’s Bike Share Program. All of the bikes used in the program were abandoned bikes on campus refurbished at the College’s student-run bike shop. Students who enjoy exploring nature are thrilled by the school’s Outdoor Program, which runs weekend trips for kayaking, rafting, and other outdoor activities. The school purchases 100 percent post-consumer waste recycled paper for its departments, and mulches all grass clippings. In 2009, Whitman installed solar panels on the Bratton Tennis Center. Organic compost is used in the majority of campus landscaping projects. The school’s dining services, provided by Bon Appetit, have a “Farm to Fork” local food initiative and purchase eco-friendly containers. In addition, they aim to serve organic and sustainable food such as rBGH-free dairy, cage-free eggs, and antibiotic-free meat.
