Sustainability
The University of Windsor is located in Ontario, Canada, and faces the beautiful Detroit River. The urban campus, which is easily accessible by foot, bus, and bike (the preferred methods of student transport), is also near one of the busiest trade crossings between the U.S. and Canada. This proximity makes the university acutely aware of the environmental and financial impact of trade, motor vehicles, and the gasoline they require. It is also ideally situated to study this issue: the university’s Centre for Hybrid Automotive Research and Green Energy (CHARGE) explores transportation electrification, wind power, solar energy and smart grid technology, and brings together industry experts, graduate students, and post-doctoral fellows for research and development. The university is also home to The Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research (GLIER), a multidisciplinary program that studies complex environmental problems, such as “the effects of multiple environmental stressors on large lakes, their watersheds and marine environments.” The Earth and Environmental Sciences department offers bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees. The Bachelor of Environmental Studies program focuses on the “relationships between health, sustainability and environmental challenges.” The University of Windsor was also the first school in Canada to offer an accredited Environmental Engineering degree. In 2012, The Ed Lumley Centre for Engineering Innovation, which is built to LEED Gold standards, opened its doors. The same year, the University of Windsor received the Essex Regional Conservation Authority 2012 Conservation Award for biology teaching related to the environment. In January 2013, the University officially appointed an Environmental Advocate, and joined the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education.
