Sustainability
As a relatively young and growing university, the University of South Carolina Aiken is hardly mired in centuries of bad environmental habits, and is using this mobility to pivot toward positive change. In 2009 the school made a commitment to achieve climate neutrality by the year 2020 with the help of purchasing “green” electricity and limited use of carbon offsets. As the bulk of a campus’s carbon footprint results from energy consumption, these efforts are focusing on reduction of electricity and natural gas the university just built a new freshman dorm to reduce students’ vehicle emissions by approximately 10 percent. Overall, USC-Aiken is showing a striking 10 percent energy reduction each month. The campus’s twelve main buildings are operated and maintained sustainably, and the university promotes transparency in its energy consumption by conducting a greenhouse gas emissions inventory and posting its results publicly on the ACUPCC website. It contractually requires its cleaning services to purchase green cleaning products, offers sustainable and local food where possible in dining halls. One hundred percent of the campus grounds are maintained organically. In addition, USC-Aiken is seeking Energy Department stimulus funding approval to accelerate energy conservation actions, with the goal of reducing each building’s energy consumption by 10 percent and the campus’s overall carbon footprint from purchased electricity by 20 percent. In the future, the university also plans to deepen its efforts to engage students and faculty in dynamic sustainability practices and research such as the exploration of alternative energy sources including solar energy pilot projects with community partners.
