  • Sustainability

The University of North Carolina at Greensboro identifies sustainability as one of its five core values, defining it as “academics, operations and outreach… conducted with careful attention to the enduring interconnectedness of social equity, the environment, the economy, and aesthetics.” The choice to include aesthetics makes the UNCG sustainability philosophy unique, and students from the Arts engage in the sustainability discussion through programs including the Creative Sustainability Initiative. The Sustainability Office website quotes the naturalist John Muir: “When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the universe.” As an interdisciplinary program incorporating study of ecosystems, culture, economics, and policy, the UNCG degree in environmental and sustainability studies reflects this interconnectedness. The program includes an optional study abroad year, which allows students to pursue a wide range of environmental issues, from the deteriorating coastal reefs of Australia to wildlife protection in South Africa to infrastructure and community development in developing countries. The university has also advanced its operations, committing to build all new construction and major renovation projects to LEED Silver standards, and encouraging individual campus offices to complete the Green Office Certification Program. In 2011, Chancellor Linda Brady signed the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment (ACUPCC), pledging to “develop a strategic plan to achieve climate neutrality.” Greensboro garnered AASHE STARS Silver Ratings in 2011–2013, and was a Sierra Club Cool Schools pick for 2011–2013. Campus Dining has also committed to sustainability by buying local produce, cage-free eggs, and ocean-friendly seafood, and has eliminated trays to cut down on food and water waste.
