  • Sustainability

The University of Nebraska—Lincoln is deeply committed to good stewardship of the land and to agricultural innovation. It is home to the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the Center for Applied Rural Innovation, and the national Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education program, which is funded by the USDA and offers competitive grants and educational opportunities. The campus itself is surrounded by more green space and parkland per capita than most U.S. cities! Its first buildings were built in 1869, but as the story goes, the first few hundred trees planted perished and the first flowerbeds were decimated by “marauding hordes of locusts.” Undeterred, in 1873 a farm campus was built. Today, the university is further expanding, and continuing its mission to reduce the “impact of the University of Nebraska—Lincoln on its environment.” The new Innovation Campus, located right next to the city’s wastewater plant, launched in August of 2014. The campus’s Centralized Renewable Energy System uses treated wastewater from the plant to heat and cool campus buildings. The university also developed the Urban Waters Project, a living laboratory focusing on the city’s two watershed basins, as well as an “evidenced-based mobile toolkit” to educate city officials, students, and community members alike. The project monitors and assesses the effectiveness of green infrastructure strategies and education, and promotes “community involvement and multi-organizational partnerships through an integrated research-education-outreach model to improve water quality.” In addition, the university developed the Sustainable Schoolyard Partnership, which helps local schools create “beautiful and ecological places that foster learning and healthy mental and physical development.”
