  • Sustainability

With a team name like the Hurricanes, the University of Miami has no choice but to take sustainability seriously! In addition to signing the ACU President Climate Commitment, President Donna E. Shalala has become a member of the Risky Business Project Committee, a renowned group of national leaders that focuses on quantifying and publicizing the economic risks from the impacts of a changing climate. UM has been part of the discussion about Sea Level Rise through its participation with the Southeast Florida Regional Climate Change Compact, a unique partnership between Broward, Miami-Dade, Monroe and Palm Beach counties, their municipalities and the Institute for Sustainable Communities. UM has invested in LEED-certified buildings that are not only offsetting a good portion of the university’s carbon footprint, but also saved the institution a lot of money in operation costs: the university has already eight LEED buildings for a total of 1 million green square feet! More is on the way as UM inaugurated its first LEED Platinum building in January 2015. The facility features a 70-kilowatt photovoltaic system, and two rainwater harvesting cisterns that will help with storm water management and water conservation. Seventy-five percent of campus buildings have seen energy-related retrofits in the past three years, and close to three-quarters of cleaning products used on campus are Green Seal-certified. In October 2014, the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science inaugurated its new Marine Technology & Life Sciences Seawater Complex. A one-of-a-kind SUSTAIN (SUrge-STructure-Atmosphere INteraction) research facility is a major component of this complex. It is the only place in the world with a wind-wave-storm surge simulator capable of generating Category 5 hurricane-force winds in a 3D test environment. Designed by the world’s leading aquarium architects, the new seawater tank will provide scientists and engineers with access to critical observations within a realistic, but scaled and controlled environment. SUSTAIN enables the development and testing of building envelopes to protect critical structures during hazardous conditions, and will also be used to create advanced sensor technologies, including remote and optical imaging systems that can be deployed in hurricanes.
