Sustainability
In 2011, The University of Kansas released its sustainability plan filled with green goals. The next year, KU received a STARS Bronze rating and the university is taking steps to increase its rating to silver in the near future. With a combined student body of 28,000, KU is a big campus and the university knows that reducing and recycling are vital. The school has over 1,000 recycling bins and averages 600 tons of recycled material each year! To encourage exercise and environmentally friendly transportation, KU promotes bike use with bike racks on campus, a bike rental program, and bike maintenance tips and route maps online. All that biking can make a student hungry, and luckily KU Dining Services are committed to sustainable eating. The school has trayless dining in all residence halls to reduce water and waste. Dining services also composts, donates excess cooking oil to KU Biofuels Research, and uses a rooftop garden to supply students with tasty tomatoes and herbs. Elsewhere on campus, students are helping plant trees as part of the Replant Mount Oread initiative. And an historic tree canopy is being reestablished as part of the reconstruction of Jayhawk Boulevard, a project that includes green infrastructure to reduce stormwater runoff from the ridge top campus. KU’s famous Jayhawks also care about the environment and in 2013 teamed with KU Recycling to create the Rock Chalk Recycle program where volunteers educate the public on how to recycle and compost at sporting events. Environmentally conscious freshmen can also become KU Stewards through a year-long program that introduces first-year students to campus sustainability and fosters leadership.
