  • Sustainability

With Big 10 athletics, a world-renowned Writer’s Workshop, and a reputation as a public Ivy already to its credit, now the University of Iowa can add green campus trailblazer to its list of accomplishments. The University of Iowa has adopted a set of ambitious sustainability targets to achieve by 2020; these include net negative energy growth, 60 percent waste-diversion and 40 percent renewable energy consumption. Through the Biomass Fuel Project, the UI seeks to replace coal in its power plant with locally sourced renewable fuels. Sustainable design practices have been in place for a decade, leading to eight LEED-certified buildings on campus, including the LEED Platinum College of Public Health. The university’s Office of Sustainability, helps construct its sustainability agenda. As part of the UI's Sustainable Water Resources Initiative, ten new interdisciplinary faculty positions have been created, and the Undergraduate Certificate in Sustainability is one of the most popular certificate programs on campus with 130 students enrolled. In addition, a new environmental planning and policy major was recently added. The UI’s Career Center offers opportunities to learn about environmental jobs in Iowa. Organizations such as the Army Corps of Engineers, the EPA, Stanley Consultants, John Deere, National Park Service, and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources often recruit UI graduates. There are several student groups working on sustainability initiatives on campus, including: Net Impact, USGBC Students, the Environmental Law Society, UI Student Gardeners, and the Environmental Coalition, and ECO Hawk. UI Student Government has also established a Green Initiative Fund to support green projects on campus.
