  • Sustainability

The University of Denver is actively engaged in broad based action around sustainability practices on campus. Despite and increase in campus population and square footage of campus buildings, in 2014, DU reached the 2020 goal of a 24 percent carbon footprint reduction over the 2006 baseline. A focus on energy efficiency retrofits has led to an average annual savings of over 900,000 KWH. Recent water conservation efforts led to a one year 45 percent decrease in the use of irrigation water. Recent renovations to three buildings have led to LEED gold and silver certifications. The use of bicycles on campus has quadrupled over the last three years. This interest in alternative transportation is supported by a campus bike shop where student mechanics provide free tune ups for the campus community, bike mechanics and commuting classes, and a bike library (that supplements the city wide bike share also available on campus). Nearly all students and staff receive the benefit of a free all access pass for public transportation, including the light rail system, which has a station on campus. A new and expanded community garden provides a bridge between students and the neighborhood. Three community supported agriculture programs provide fresh, local food to campus, supplementing the monthly farmer’s market. The campus wide Sustainability Council is supplemented by staff sustainability committees in Student Life and the library and over thirteen student organizations (including four graduate groups). Sustainability across the curriculum continues to grow. Multiple classes each year use campus sustainability as a living, learning laboratory for their classes, contributing creative real world solutions to complex problems. The interdisciplinary sustainability minor continues to grow, with over sixty students representing twenty-three majors. Student leaders annually convene the Earth Day Summit inviting all of campus to join in discussions on sustainability led by campus and regional leaders. The campus community just concluded a yearlong planning process that led to a three year Sustainability Plan with clear, measurable goals for stepping stones to sustainability.
